Search Engine Tips on how to get your Web site to appear on the result pages of search engines and directories.
It is impossible to achieve the goal of appearing in the top ranking list of all the high traffic search engines. You are going to have varying success rates with different search engines due to the collection of variables that play a role in search engine algorithms. These algorithms use variables which it then assigns values to, based on the contents of your page. Every one of these engines, assigns values differently and use different variables. The best policy is to use those elements that are common to most of the popular search services. Many people suggest using multiple versions of your pages to suit each database, but this will result in some of them penalizing the site for "spamming" the indexes. It may result in having a domain completely removed from a database, and prevented from being included in the future.
Knowing the basic indexing characteristics specific to individual search engines can help one design a page that can be found toward the top of the thousands of possible web pages returned from a search query. Here are a few search engine sites, and the core variables they use to index. This can give you an idea of what to consider when designing your web sites pages.
Excite does not make use of <META> tags. Keywords and summaries are automatically generated by Excite. Excite's algorithm sorts repeated words or themes within a site page. It then selects sentences contain these words for the summary. The words within these sentences are used as keywords for which the site can be found when used to searched.
Within the first 250 words, use as many relevant keywords as possible. Use complete sentences, with an initail capital letter and ending punctuation.
Infoseek was the most abused search engine by spammers and promotion artists early on, because it allowed for immediate indexing and feedback. One of the early techniques, which almost ruined them, was the "index and switch" technique where a URL was submitted, indexed and then a new page inserted in the URL. Infoseek changes their algorithms as often as weekly! They no longer index pages immediately.
InfoSeek uses both the keywords and description <META> tags. Do not repeat versions of a keyword more than a few times, they will penalize you! If you do not make use of the description <META> tag, InfoSeek's agent will simply record the first 200 characters after the
<BODY>
tag as the web page description.. InfoSeek also indexes the ALT attribute in the <IMG>tag. If the majority of your page consists of graphics, you should describe your page with the ALT attribute. ( a good idea anyway!)
Lycos creates titles and descriptions from the text of your page. Lycos' search algorithm selects a portion of the page to represents its theme based on word frequency and related words, and. then displays this section as the site's description. The keywords are chosen via search algorithms by Lycos' spider, trying to duplicate an "intelligence" by using a dictionary of related concept words. For example the words "water" and "wet", while obviously related, are also relevant to "rain" and "flood"
WebCrawler's algorithm uses the statement within the <TITLE> tag to use for the name of your page. If the title is blank, it will default to the page URL.
